Current management of overweight and obesity
Less Invasive Alternatives, Such as Bariatric Embolization
The current management of overweight and obesity involves a multidisciplinary approach that combines lifestyle modifications, medical therapies, and, in some cases, surgical interventions. Medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide) and liraglutide are used to support weight loss by acting as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which reduce appetite and improve glycemic control.
Less invasive alternatives, such as bariatric embolization, are gaining attention. This interventional procedure aims to reduce hunger without the need for major surgery, offering an option for patients who are not candidates for pharmacologic treatment.
For patients with class II or III obesity who do not respond to medical management, gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy are considered effective surgical options. These interventions are recommended following a thorough evaluation and after taking into account the patient’s overall health status.
I lead a multidisciplinary team to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment plan and long-term management strategy for overweight and obesity.
